Manaw is the colorful festival of the Kachin people who live in northern Myanmar and annually held in January. Manaw festival means reunion ceremony and traditionally Manaw was a Nat Festival, honoring guardian spirits, and the Padian Nat is believed to be the protector of Kachin. On the other hand, it is a show of gratitude to ancestral spirits and all participants pray for a bright future. There are many versions of Manaw: a version to celebrate the New Year, other versions to celebrate victory in battle, housewarming, and so on. In earlier times, it was a festival for the Duwars, or tribal chieftains, but now it is the victory festival for all of Kachin State. Manaw festival (The New Year Festivals) are celebrated in Myitklyina with dancing around the erected Manaw poles, quite similar to the totem poles of North American Indians.
